First published in 1570, this edition is from Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Antwerp, Aegidius Coppen Diesth, 1571). Reference Koeman Ort 2, map 53; and Van den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas Maps, 176. Van den Broecke estimates that only 275 copies of this 1571 Latin edition were printed (The Map Collector issue 36)..

The word "Barbary" refers to the coastal region of North Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to Egypt. "Biledulgerid" refers to the long strip of land south of Barbary, also stretching from the Atlantic to Egypt. At the left are the Canary Islands. Numerous lakes are shown inland, in the heart of the Sahara. Tripoli is near the right edge. The Atlas Mountains are shown in profile. There are numerous notes throughout the map.

First published in 1570, this edition is from Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Antwerp, Aegidius Coppen Diesth, 1571). Reference Koeman Ort 2, map 52, and Marcel van den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas Maps, 174. Van den Broecke estimates that 275 copies of this 1571 Latin edition were printed (The Map Collector, issue 36).

The map appears on page number 52 only in the 1570, 1571 and 1573 Latin text editions of Abraham Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum , all three published in Antwerp. This copy known to have come from the 1571 Latin edition. Van den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas Maps, 174.

The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in 1826, published inexpensive texts intended to adapt scientific and other material for the rapidly expanding reading public. SDUK publications, such as maps, were intended for the working and the middle classes. It ceased operation in 1848.

Lower Egypt and the Adjacent Deserts, with a Part of Palestine; to which has been added the Nomenclature of the Roman age by L.S. de la Rochette.
Imprint: London. Published by Ja’s Wyld Charing Cross East , & Model of the Earth. Leicester Sq’r. 21 ¼”h x 29 ½”w. Original outline color. Verso blank except page number: 31. Wrinkle in margin. Image in very good condition. Map by Louis Stanislas d’Arcy Delarochette (1731-1802).

The map first appeared in 1802, published in London by William Faden. This edition was published after James Wyld, Senior, (1790-1836) took over the Faden business in 1823. James Wyld , Junior, (1812-1887) entered his father’s business circa 1830. He exhibited the “Monster Globe” in Leicester Square as part of the Great Exhibition of London in 1851. It was a model of the earth viewed from the interior. Note the reference to the “Model of the Earth” in Wyld’s imprint above. This places this edition of the map circa 1851. See the sketch of the globe in Tooley’s Dictionary of Mapmakers, Revised Edition Q-Z.

The map extends south along the Mediterranean Sea from Acre (Israel) past Lake of Menzaleh, the Eastern Nile, the Western Nile, and Alexandria to Arabs Gulf. The map extends south to the Red Sea. There is fine detail throughout with numerous villages, pyramids, roads, trails and camel routes detailed. The desert is engraved to simulate sand. The Pilgrins’ Road (or Hadj Route) from Cairo to Suez to Aqaba and on toward Mecca is shown.

Marked in the map are “First Landing of the French 1st July 1798” southwest of Alexandria and “French Landed 1801” near Abukir Bay northeast of Alexandria. The map may have been published to satisfy interest in the area after Nelson's Battle of the Nile (1798) when he destroyed the French fleet in the harbor of Abukir and General Abercrombie's victory at Alexandria (1801), which let to Napoleon being driven from Egypt.

A table at the lower left gives the translation for some common Arabic names.

Nubia defines a region of the Nile River to include Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan. The map extends from the Dead Sea in Israel to Khartoum, Sedan.
